Carr earns spot on academic list with 3.56 GPA

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Ally Carr finished her final year at the University of New Orleans, earning a spot on the Southland Conference Commissioner's List for the 2020-21 academic year. The Shedden resident maintained a 3.56 GPA in her pre-med program. To make the Commissioner's List, student-athletes had to maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average for the year and had to be eligible to compete in their sport.

Season ends for Carr despite not dropping a match at conference

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Ally Carr had her NCAA beach volleyball career end without losing a match at the Southland Conference championship. Her New Orleans Privateers lost three games to one to Houston Baptist University, eliminating the Division One school from the competition. In NCAA beach playoffs, a winner is determined when a school wins three matches. Even if two players go undefeated for the losing school, they do not advance.
Twice Carr and partner Maxine Walsh had their match called during the tournament, due to the opposing school winning three matches.
The Privateers' number two team was one point away from match victory against Houston Baptist (21-18, 20-18), when their opponent won a third match on another court.
Carr and Walsh opened the double elimination tournament defeating Central Arkansas, 21-8, 21-19. After dropping game one to host and top seeded Texas A&M Corpus Christi, in the second round, Carr and Walsh were leading game two, 18-14, when it was called. Carr finishes her collegiate career with 40 match wins, fourth best all-time at New Orleans.

Carr and Privateers split day one

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas. - Shedden's Ally Carr and her University of New Orleans Privateers team went 1-1, on day one of the NCAA Southland Conference beach volleyball championship.
New Orleans, ranked fifth, upended fourth seeded Central Arkansas, winning three of five matches, in the opening round this morning, keeping the Privateers on the winner's side of the bracket.
Host and top seeded Texas A&M Corpus Christi won the three required matches against New Orleans this afternoon. Two matches, including Carr's, were unfinished.
Now New Orleans faces a must win to keep the season alive against Houston Baptist University, Saturday morning.
In her opening match against Central Arkansas, Carr and partner Maxine Walsh, won 21-8, 21-19. Carr and Walsh dropped game one against Corpus Christi, 21-11, but were winning game two, 18-14, when the match was called. Corpus Christi had won three matches against New Orleans. Once a school wins three matches the two remaining matches stop play.

Carr excited for NCAA conference beach volleyball

NEW ORLEANS, La. - A two year wait is over. After being cancelled last year due to the covid-19 pandemic, Ally Carr is looking forward to this year's NCAA Southland Conference women's beach volleyball championship, a three day event starting Friday, in Corpus Christi, Texas. The Privateers' team, seeded fifth, opens the double elimination tournament taking on number four seeded Central Arkansas, at 11 a.m. Friday. The winner advances to face top seeded A&M Corpus Christi, at 1 p.m.
Carr ranks fourth all-time at New Orleans with 39 career wins.

Carr splits final regular season matches

HATTISBRG, Miss. - Shedden's Ally Carr and partner Maxine Walsh, split their final regular season matches for the New Orleans Privateers' women's beach volleyball team. Carr and Walsh defeated Southeastern Louisiana University, two games to none (21-19, 22-20), but were edged by Southern Miss, two to one. (21-19, 17-21, 15-11). The NCAA Southland Conference championships are in Corpus Christi, Texas, April 23-25.

Carr wins twice at beach tourney

BATON ROUGE, La. - Ally Carr, of Shedden, won two of five matches for the New Orleans Privateers' women's beach volleyball team, here at the Battle of the Bayou tournament. Today, Carr and partner Maxine Walsh defeated Central Arkansas, 21-18, 21-17. New Orleans' number two team lost to Louisiana State (LSU), 21-15, 21-12 and Springhill, out of Mobile, Alabama, 21-18, 21-14.
Friday, Carr and Walsh defeated Louisiana-Monroe University (ULM), 21-18, 18-21, 15-8, in their first match of the two day event.  Carr then played with Liz Gialanella, but the pair loss to Texas A&M Kingsville, 21-15, 21-19.

Carr and Walsh win big over Southeastern

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Ally Carr, of Shedden, and partner Maxine Walsh, swept Southeastern Lousiana University's Michelle Mirarchi and Hannah Barosh, 21-14, 21-12, at the Southern Miss beach courts.
The University of New Orleans Privateers' number two pair picks up their fourth match win of the season. Carr now has 36 career wins at New Orleans.
Earlier in the day Carr and Walsh lost a close match, to Southern Miss, 15-21, 24-22, 15-12 and fell 21-15, 21-18, to Spring Hill College, out of Mobile, Alabama.

Carr and Walsh defeat Southern Miss

BATON ROUGE, La. - Ally Carr, of Shedden, and partner Maxine Walsh, defeated Southern Miss' Bre Favre and Olivia Hepworth, 24-22, 19-21, 15-8, at the LSU women's beach volleyball Invitational. The University of New Orleans Privateers' number two pair fell to Houston Baptist Univeristy (HBU)'s Lauren Huggins and Allison Stanfill, 21-19, 21-11. Saturday, Carr and Walsh lost to third ranked (in the NCAA) Louisiana State (LSU) and 16th ranked South Carolina, both matches in two games.

Carr and Walsh go 1-2 at beach tournament

MONROE, La. - Ally Carr, of Shedden, and partner Maxine Walsh, the number two women's beach volleyball team for the University of New Orleans Privateers, had a 1-2 match record at the ULM Warhawk Invitational.
Carr and Walsh late today came back to defeat Southeastern's Hannah Barash and Michelle Mirarchi, 12-21, 21-16, 15-10.
The Privateers' pair lost to University of Louisiana-Monroe (ULM)'s Abi Demmer and Kayla Gallant, 21-14 and 21-16, earlier today. On Friday, Carr and Walsh fell to Missouri State's Grace Cook and Chloe Tome, 21-18, 21-11.
New Orleans returns to action March 20th at the LSU Invitational, in Baton Rouge.

Ally Carr is back at her happy place the beaches of New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Ally Carr has a renewed appreciation and love for playing in the sand. The 21-year old from Shedden has played beach volleyball for nearly a decade, but following a year away from the sport due to the pandmic, the junior with the New Orleans Privateers' women's team, was eager to feel sand under her feet.

ELMWOOD, La. - Ally Carr, of Shedden, and partner Maxine Walsh, the number two women's beach volleyball team for the University of New Orleans Privateers, earned their first match victory, defeating Utah, two games to none, this afternoon, day two of the Green Wave Invitational. Carr and Walsh fell 21-19, 22-20, to the University of Alabama-Birmingham this morning. On day one Friday, Carr and Walsh lost to host Tulane, two games to none and Southeastern Louisiana, 2-1.

Carr and Walsh drop opening day matches

ELMWOOD, La. - Ally Carr, of Shedden, and partner Maxine Walsh, dropped matches to both Tulane and Southeastern Louisiana, on opening day of the women's beach volleyball season for the University of New Orleans Privateers.
Southeastern Louisiana defeated Carr/Walsh, 21-19, 19-21, 15-13, while Tulane took a two game sweep, 21-16, 21-10.

Promising beach volleyball season suddenly cancelled

SHEDDEN. ON. - Ally Carr was preparing for another weekend of beach volleyball before her promising season unexpectedly was cut short. A casualty of the COVID-19 pandemic, all NCAA sports seasons were cancelled in mid March, leaving players and coaches disappointed. Carr and Victoria Corcoran were the number two team for the University of New Orleans Pioneers' women's beach volleyball program over five tournaments on the NCAA Division One Southland Conference's women's beach volleyball schedule.

Carr and Corcoran go 2-2 in beach volleyball

COVINGTON, LA. - Ally Carr, of Shedden, and partner Victoria Corcoran, the University of New Orleans Privateers' number two beach volleyball team, went 2-2 in NCAA action. Friday, Carr and Corcoran defeated Texas A&M Kingsville's Meghan Merlino and Macy Berg, 21-15, 21-18, but lost to Texas A&M Corpus Christi's Brooke Anderson and Guilana Corrales, 16-21, 20-22. Next day, Carr and Corcoran dumped Nicholls State's Kylie Lockhart and Devon Bright, 21-11, 21-9 and fell to Tulane's Kaylie McHugh and Eva Torruella, 14-21, 19-21.

Carr opens beach season with five match wins

MIAMI, FL. - Ally Carr, of Shedden, and partner Victoria Corcoran, with the University of New Orleans Privateers beach volleyball team, defeated Missouri State's Grace Cook and Rachel Evans, 27-25, 21-17 and Florida Memorial's Fatima Rajaee and Adriana Soto, 21-13, 21-12, Saturday. A day earlier Carr and Corcoran beat San Diego City College's Alina Fletes and Kareemah Hopkins, 21-10, 21-9, but lost two close games to FIU's Emma Erteltova and Ali Denney, 26-28, 19-21.
Last season, Carr won 16 matches, the majority with Victoria Corcoran. Carr, who is in the pre-vet program at New Orleans, is a 2017 graduate of Parkside C.I.

Beavers' volleyball settle for double WOSSAA silver

LONDON, ON. - It was a pair of agonizing five game defeats for the gold medal. The Lord Dorchester Beavers were edged in both the senior and junior Western Ontario Secondary School Association (WOSSAA) 1-A girls' volleyball championship matches, at Westminster Secondary School. In the senior tilt, the London Monsignor Bruyere Panthers squeezed by the Beavers, in the fifth and deciding set, to capture gold and advance to OFSAA, taking the match 27-25, 18-25, 15-25, 25-21, 16-14.
In the junior gold game, St. Marys DCVI defeateded Dorchester, three games to two.

Beavers bring home WOSSAA junior boys' volleyball bronze

LONDON, ON. - One extended break seemed to re-energize the Dorchester Beavers. Down two games to one, the Beavers took over the match mid through the fourth game on their way to capturing the bronze medal, at Western Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association (WOSSAA) single-A junior boys' volleyball, defeating the host London Christian Pioneers in five games, 20-25, 25-10, 20-25, 25-19, 15-9.

WATERLOO, ON. - The St. Thomas Express U15 boys' team brought home the silver medal in the division two tier one playoffs, at the Ontario Volleyball Association championships, at RIM Park. St. Thomas, owners of a 6-3 match record, lost a tight gold medal final, two games to one, to Kingston.

DORCHESTER - Two years after settling for a silver medal for a second consecutive year, the Lord Dorchester Beavers prevailed in the championship match. The Beavers swept aside the Goderich Vikings, in three games, 25-21, 25-26, 25-19, in the WOSSAA 1A junior girls' gold medal match, at LDSS.

St. Marys returns to OFSAA dumping WCI in WOSSAA final

DORCHESTER - The St. Marys Salukis are returning to OFSAA for a third consecutive year. Led by their captain Abbey Thorup, St. Marys defeated the Woodstock Red Devils, three games to one, in the WOSSAA 1A senior girls' volleyball gold medal match. Five St. Marys players won OFSAA gold in 2017. A year ago St. Marys placed fourth, losing the bronze medal match.

Beavers capture TVRA junior girls volleyball title

WOODSTOCK, ON. - The Lord Dorchester Beavers never dropped a game on their way to capturing the Thames Valley Regional Athletics (TVRA) South-East single-A junior girls' volleyball title, defeating the Central Elgin Titans in the final, 25-19, 25-20, 25-22, at Woodstock Collegiate Institute.
In senior action, the Woodstock CI Red Devils,  the class of the East Division all season steamed through the playoffs, capping it with a three games to none sweep of the West Elgin Wildcats in the final. .

U15 Express boys bring home bronze

ST. THOMAS - The St. Thomas Express placed third at an under-15 boys' Ontario Volleyball Association (OVA) tournament at Hamilton this past weekend. At the same time in Stratford, the U13 Golden Spikes were fifth at their OVA tournament. In January, the Express Bullets placed fourth at an U16 girls' OVA event, while the Express U15 boys were ninth at their OVA tourney.

Express U13 girls can't buy a win at provincials

WATERLOO, ON. - The St. Thomas Express failed to win a best of three match in seven outings, at the Ontario Volleyball Association provincial under-13 girls championships. Their tournament ended today with a loss to the Ottawa Fusion, 25-11, 25-22.

Ride ends in provincial quarters for U14 girls

WATERLOO, ON. - A solid run by the St. Thomas Express was stopped by the Ancaster Lions Black, in the Ontario Volleyball Association provincial 14U girls championships.
Ancaster won a best of three game quarterfinal, 25-22, 25-22. The Express were 6-0 in matches heading into the quarterfinals.

Express undefeated at OVA 14U girls provincials

WATERLOO, ON. - The St. Thomas Express remain undefeated after six matches, at the Ontario Volleyball Association provincial championships, at RIM Park. St. Thomas defeated Stratford, (25-19, 25-23) Milton Edge (25-11, 20-15, 15-16) and London Sharks Great White (25-18, 16-25, 15-8) today, in the power pools round. On day one Thursday during preliminary play, the Express dropped Waterloo (25-8, 17-25, 15-7), Niagara Rapids (25-15, 11-25, 15-12) and Sarnia Twin Bridges Thunder (25-11, 19-25, 15-7). The Express take on the Northern Chill, from Sudbury, in the round of 16.

Express U14 boys win gold at OVA provincials

WATERLOO, ON. - It was a gold medal for the St. Thomas Express in the Division Two Tier Two, at the Ontario Volleyball Association (OVA) provincial championships, at RIM Park. The Express defeated the Oakville Thunder, 25-23, 25-17, in the final. In the second game, St. Thomas trailed 10-0 and 12-3, before rallying to victory. As well, the U15 girls won a bronze medal in division five.

Express set for OVA provincial debut

ST. THOMAS –  The St. Thomas Express is set for their first appearance at the Ontario Volleyball Association provincial championships, at RIM Park, in Waterloo.
The Express’ under-15 girls have advanced to the Division five tier 2 semifinals, against the Chatham Ballhawks. Meanwhile, the U14 boys take to the court, for a Division 2 tier 1 quarterfinal versus Pegasus. The U13 and U14 girls, have their OVA provincials, April 20-22. Known as Spikes St. Thomas since 2011, the club went through a rebrand in 2017, creating a name and logo that reflects the railway heritage of St. Thomas.

Express U15 and U14 teams have solid tournaments

ST. THOMAS -  Both the St. Thomas Express under-14 and U15 girls' volleyball teams had successful one day tournaments, at Supreme Courts. Today, St. Thomas went 8-2, falling only to the Chatham Ballhawks, in the second U14 tournament of the Supreme Sunday Series. On Saturday, the U15 girls compiled a 10-2 record, including defeating the Kitchener Tigers and London Sharks.

All Shenanigans at Express co-ed volleyball tourney

ST. THOMAS -  It was all Shenanigans at the inaugural St. Thomas Express volleyball club co-ed tournament, at Parkside Collegiate Institute. Shenanigans went undefeated winning the 16-team volleyball tournament, defeating Burgermeister, in the gold medal final. Tinsel Tips took the bronze medal. A fund-raiser for the club, the event featured a raffle table, with donations from local businesses. The St. Thomas Express VC, formerly known as Spikes, offers grass roots, house league and competitive volleyball programs.

MITCHELL, ON.  -  The Lord Dorchester Beavers brought home the silver medal, from the WOSSAA A junior boys' volleyball tournament, held in Mitchell. Monseigneur-Bruyere, out of London, defeated Dorchester in the gold game, 25-21, 25-13, 25-7.

St. Joe's captures first District junior boys' volleyball title

WOODSTOCK, ON. –  Not only did the St. Josephs's Rams avenge their only regular season loss, they made school history along the way. The Rams won their school's first District junior boys' volleyball title, defeating the St. Mary's Warriors, three games to one (25-22, 25-15, 21-25, 25-22), in the final, at St. Mary's Catholic high school. St. Joe's advances to WOSSAA AA, November 16, at South Collegiate Institute, in London.

Parkside wins volleyball thriller over Central Elgin

ST. THOMAS –  Thanks to a thrilling five game win in the Thames Valley Regional Athletics senior boys volleyball final, the Parkside Stampeders are returning to WOSSAA. Parkside edged the Central Elgin Titans, three games to two, in the championship match, played at Parkside CI, November 9. The Stampeders took the first two games, before the Titans grabbed the momentum for two victories of their own. An incredible solo effort in the fifth and deciding game, lifted the Stampeders to a spot at WOSSAA AA November 16, at South Collegiate Institute, in London.

Rams tame Bulldogs on way to District junior volleyball final

ST. THOMAS –  After shaking off some rust, the St. Joseph's Rams showed why they finished in top spot. The Rams advanced to the London District junior boys' volleyball final, caging the London St. Andre Bessette Bulldogs, by winning their semi-final three games to one, at St. Joseph's high school. St. Joe's dropped game one, 25-16, but thundered back with three consecutive victories, 25-17, 25-16, 25-22.
The Rams, the top team during the regular season, with a 10-1 match record (32-10 in games), head to the final, to face the Woodstock St. Mary's Warriors, Friday, at St. Mary's Catholic high school, in Woodstock.

Parkside wins CECI volleyball tourney

ST. THOMAS –  The Parkside Stampeders ran the table by not dropping one game (10-0), on their way to winning the Central Elgin Titans' senior boys volleyball tournament. Parkside beat London South, in the final, two games to none, with Nick Sturk named the Stampeders' player of the game. The Stampeders have a match record of 7-0, in the Thames Valley Regional Athletics (TVRA) South division. Playoffs begin November 2.

Wildcats bring home WOSSAA volleyball silver

ST. MARYS, ON. –  They are returning home with silver. The West Elgin Wildcats met a more talented team in the WOSSAA ‘A’ senior girls’ volleyball final, named the St. Marys Salukis. The host team won the gold medal and advances to OFSAA, following a three game sweep of the Wildcats, 25-8, 25-10, 25-17.

Stampeders play bad hosts

ST. THOMAS - The Parkside Stampeders hosted an invitational girls’ volleyball tournament on home court and schooled the opposition. Both the Stampeders’ senior and junior teams took the gold medals. The senior Stampeders defeated London Clarke Road, 25-16, 25-15, in their final, completing a 9-2 record, after edging the West Elgin Wildcats in the semi-finals, two games to one. In junior action, Parkside got by London Laurier, 25-19, 25-23, for a 10-1 overall run. The semis saw Parkside defeat Clarke Road, while Laurier eliminated London Westminster.

Aiming for South perch in volleyball

ST. THOMAS - Led by captain and middle Ally Carr, the Parkside Stampeders improved to 2-0, in the Thames Valley Regional Athletics South division, dropping the East Elgin Eagles, 25-15, 25-17, 25-23, at Parkside CI. The Stampeders finished first in the South the past two seasons, with the West Elgin Wildcats finishing second both times. Leading the Stampeders this season are Carr, Lauren Donker, Haley Summers and setter Holly Thomson.

Sturk named Mr. Volleyball

ST. THOMAS –  Clayton Sturk is Mr. Volleyball, for the Thames Valley Regional Athletics (TVRA) South-East Division. Sturk helped the Parkside Stampeders win the TVRA South-East senior boys' AAA title and advance to the WOSSAA final. Sturk, along with Cooper Van Vlaanderen (East Elgin), Patrick Acres (West Elgin), Nathyn Smeets (St. Joe’s) and Jacob Nevilll (Arthur Voaden), were selected for the TVRA boys' all-star volleyball game.

Seven WOSSAA medals for local schools

ST. THOMAS –  Teams from St. Thomas - Elgin County and Dorchester high schools, brought home six medals from the WOSSAA tournaments for girls basketball and boys volleyball.
Lord Dorchester was the lone champion, winning the senior girls A basketball championship, defeating St. Marys DCVI, 47-38.
The Parkside Stampeders made the senior girls’ AA basketball final, but lost to London Mother Teresa, 48-33.
At triple A basketball, the East Elgin Eagles won the bronze medal game at both the senior and junior levels. The senior Eagles beat London CCH, 42-30, after losing to London Lucas, 64-29, in their semi-final. Lucas features Sarah Donavan, who recently signed a letter of intent to attend Davidson College.
In volleyball, the Parkside Stampeders were AA silver medalists, losing the final to host Stratford Central.
East Elgin captured the bronze medal in AAA action, in a three game sweep of London CCH. The Eagles lost to the eventual champions, London Saunders, in the semi-finals.
The West Elgin Wildcats also took home bronze, dusting St. Marys DCVI, in three games, at the 'A' tournament.
