ST. THOMAS, Ont. -  Dorchester and Elgin County has a champion and two silver medalists, from Western Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association (WOSSAA) basketball and volleyball.

The St. Joseph’s Rams won the WOSSAA AA junior boys crown defeating Woodstock C.I., 54-40, in the final, hosted by Tillsonburg Glendale, February 23.

The Rams handed the Huron-Perth champs, Stratford North-Western, a 47-42 setback in the semi-finals.

St. Joe's finishes with an 29-2 overall record, including a 11-0 regular season run in the London District League.

At St. Marys, the West Elgin Wildcats were no match for the host St. Marys Salukis, losing the final in three straight games.

For a second consecutive year, the Dorchester Beavers had to settle for silver, losing in the junior girls' A final, held in Goderich, against Monseigneur Bruyere from London.

Bruyere took a thriller in five games, 25-12, 22-25, 17-25, 25-22, 15-11.

Dorchester led game four by seven points when setter Katie McDonald suffered a match ending ankle injury.

Monseigneur Bruyere grabbed momentum, rallying for the win, tying the match, before taking a back and forth fifth set.

Dorchester beat Parkhill North Middlesex, three games to one, in the semi-finals, 25-9, 25-10, 15-25, 25-14.

Losing their respective AAA bronze medal volleyball games were the East Elgin Eagles, the junior team to London Lucas and the senior squad to London CCH.

Parkside fell in the junior girls’ AA volleyball bronze game, to London St. Andre Bessette.

Both the East Elgin Eagles junior and senior boys’ basketball teams lost their bronze medal games, to London CCH.

The WOSSAA tournaments for curling and hockey hit the ice, March 6.

Those with brooms head to the London Curling Club.

The WOSSAA A/AA girls and AAA boys hockey events will be at the East Elgin Community Complex, in Aylmer.

Stronach arena in London hosts AAA girls, while the A/AA boys skate to Clinton and Blyth.
