WOODSTOCK, Ont. - The Central Elgin Titans improved on their previous encounter, but the Huron Park Huskies proved too much.
In the WOSSAA AA senior boys volleyball gold medal match, the Huskies won 26-24, 25-11, 20-25,25-14, to qualify for OFSAA, the high school provincial championship.
"I told our guys they are officially on the Mount Rushmore of Central Elgin teams by getting here. (WOSSAA final)," Titans coach Scott King said. "To St. Thomas volleyball, Central Elgin has a really strong tradition and we've worked hard over the years to maintain that tradition."
The host Huskies pulled out a game one win, a key victory in igniting their loud, boisterous fans and carried that momentum in to game two.
"We had a game plan. We switched up our right side and left side to get a different look and bring some different stuff out of the middle. "(The 26-24 score) is what volleyball is all about. Sometimes you're on the 26 and sometimes you're on the 24."
Eager to sweep, the Huskies were denied by a determined Titans squad in the third set. Huron Park flexed their strengths in game four.
"Even more impressive was coming back in game three after game two," said King. "That really showed this team wanted to get it together. I'm tremensoudly proud of all of the boys."
Parker McLeod led the Huskies' hard hitting attack.
"We were trying to find ways to minimize their ability to run that and accept it when it happens," King said. "He's (McLeod) likely going to be Mr. Volleyball."
Huron Park swept Central Elgin a week earlier in the TVRA South-East final.
In the WOSSAA semifinals, the Titans defeated Stratford St. Mike's, three games to one, while Huron Park needed five games to get by London South.
Huron Park heads to OFSAA, for the first time since 1989.
South brought home the bronze medal, sweeping St. Mike's, three games to none.
At junior WOSSAA, Woodstock CI swept Woodstock St.
Mary's, three games to zero, for the gold medal. South took the bronze medal,
defeating St. Mike's.
