ST. THOMAS, Ont. - ST. THOMAS - Railway City is heading to the League2 women's semifinals.
In their first season of action in St. Thomas, Railway City clinched a playoff spot, finishing second in the League2 women's Southwest Division with a 11-1-2 record.
Next is a semifinal match against the Woodbridge Strikers, in Vaughan, Tuesday, July 29.
Sophia Lezizidis with two goals, Ashley Betancourt and Lily Ryder, both from St. Thomas, scored in Railway City's final regular season game, a 4-0 blanking of Hamilton United, 4-0, July 20 at 1Password Park.
Keeper Abi Valiquette picked up the shutout.
"Our bond has been so strong. I've known a lot of these girls for years and being able to watch each other grow as players and people has been super inspiring," said defender Emma Fluit. "Everyone shows up every day willing to compete, willing to work hard, and I feel that's what has driven us."
Railway City has been undefeated since their one loss to FC London in April. Over 14 games, Railway has scored 39 goals, while allowing only seven.
Ties were against Cambridge and Waterloo United, the team that edged Railway City out for top spot, with a 12-1-1 record.
"In plays, we have a lot of speed up front and a lot of fire power. Defensively, we're organized and we got a lot of energy in midfield," said coach Anthony Vassallo of his team. "We have a lot of players good at one versus one and have a lot of pace as well. We try to get good matchups up front and hopefully get the opportunities to finish chances."
Lezizidis led the division with 12 goals, while Raquelle Mitchell had six, Betancourt and Thalia Lievano, both four, Ryder and Heidi Miles, three goals each.
"Our high intensity, our strength of pushing and our stamina," Betancourt said. "Putting pressure on opponents gets us a way to push forward and get balls behind defenders."
Even the defence pitches in on offence, with Fluit having one of her personal highlights, a goal against Rush Academy.
"I scored off a set piece. I was pumped about that," Fluit said.
It was the game against Waterloo, Fluit feels showed Railway City would be in first place contention this season.
"Playing the first place team, there were a little bit of nerves," recalls Fluit. "But we had great performances, especially Abby our goalkeeper."
Waterloo United faces Alliance United in the other League2 women's semifinal on
July 29.
Railway City men finished third in the Southwest, with a 6-5-2 record.
In U20, Railway City sits in first place with a 10-1-3 record (33 points), but could be leap frogged by FC London, at 10-2-1 (31 points, but with a win in their final regular season match.
The Railway women finished fourth at 7-4-1.
