ST. THOMAS - The Dorchester Beavers are one win away from a spot in the TVRA SouthEast senior girls volleyball final and a trip to WOSSAA.
An intense three games to two upset of the St. Joseph's Rams in the quarterfinals, February 12, has the Beavers at their highest point of the season.
Back in December, Dorchester had only one win in their first four matches, including falling in three straight games to St. Joe's on opening day.
Dorchester finished 4-4 in sixth place, before sweeping Central Elgin in a preliminary round of the playoffs.
"I thought we could beat (St. Joe's)," Beavers' captain Avery Bradish said. "We didn't at the beginning of the season, but we put in a lot of work and we've improved a lot."
The Beavers gave notice of their improvement, taking game one against the Rams, 25-22. St. Joe's responded with a 25-23 game two win. Dorchester took game three, 25-20.
"We had a very aggressive mentality. We went more aggressive with our serves. We went for everything we could. We didn't ever give up," Bradish said. "At the net we tried to use everything we could. We didn't just put it (ball) over because that would just five them a bunch of free balls. We actually hit and we were being aggressive."
In game four, St. Joe's seemed to gain all the momentum, slamming the Beavers, 25-5, requiring a decisive fifth game to 15 points.
However, the Beavers took an early 5-2 lead.
Then St. Joe's showed why they finished third in the South-East, with a 10-3 run, for a 12-8 lead.
The Rams looked to close out the match, holding a 13-10 advantage, until the Beavers reeled off five straight points to stun their host.
Although their season ending was potentially only two points away, the Beavers never felt discouraged.
"It was the idea it was only five points and even though the set is to 15, that doesn't make a difference, it's every single point," Beavers Jordin Stevens said. "It was point by point to build it back up, then we got on a run."
Bradish delivered a few crushed balls the Rams defence couldn't handle.
"Avery crushed it," Stevens said. "When Avery gets fired up, everyone gets fired up."
Bradish and Stevens both pointed out consistent serving from Brooklyn Chilvers key in taking game five.
Dorchester moves on to take on Woodstock CI in the semifinals, Wednesday, February 18, at Parkside CI. A win would move the Beavers to the SouthEast final later that day and a berth at WOSSAA AA volleyball February 25.
Top seeded Parkside plays Ingesoll in the second SouthEast senior final.
At the junior semifinals, Parkside faces WCI, while Ingersoll takes on Woodstock College Avenue.
