LONDON, ON. - The St. Thomas Hawks' peewee team wasted no time kicking off their season on a positive note.
Joey Crevits, Brady Lidster, Will Kervin and Liam McGuigan, combined for seven touchdowns, as the Hawks devoured the Rams, 56-14, in their opening game to the London Minor Football Association season, at City Wide Fields.
Lidster, the Hawks' quarterback and kicker, also made good on all seven two-point convert attempts.
"We got the nerves out early. Overall, I think we played really well," Hawks head coach Paul Chapman said. "We got up big early and were able to get everybody the ball. Everybody got to rotate through. It's a good way to start the season for sure."
Leading 8-6 after one quarter and 32-14 at half-time, the Hawks tore up the Rams in the second half.
"What stood out was how much fun everybody had," added Chapman. "We have a lot of first year players who have never played football before. They absolutely enjoyed themselves today."
After allowing two touchdowns in the first half, the Hawks' defence clamped down in the second half, twice creating turnovers deep in the Rams zone. Penalties did stall the offence on a few occasions.
"We have a lot of work on," said Chapman. "We had a lot of silly penalties (three TD's called back), holding, things behind the play, but they're easily fixed so I'm not too worried about that."
Lidster, Crevits and McGuigan, scored two TD's each.
Both St. Thomas tyke
and atom teams lost to the Rams.
