ST. THOMAS - It was a tacky return for the Belles and Brooms Bonspiel.
After two years of cancellation due to the pandemic and only a one day event a year ago, the 43rd edition was back at two days of competition, Monday and Tuesday at the St. Thomas Curling Club.
With the theme, A tacky Christmas, players were sweeping and throwing rocks in their best Christmas sweaters, pants and even hats, at the 12-team event.
Skip Laurie Bruvall and her Ilderton teammates of Barb Morrisey, Fran Corby and Isabel Cassidy won the Belles and Broom championship.
Bruvall won an all Ilderton A flight final against clubmate Judy Oryniak, 7-6, that came to down last rock.
Cindy Gillard and her St. Thomas rink of Sue Nichol, Pam Smith, Ruth Kilgour and Kathy Lyle, captured B flight.
The Ingersoll team of Linda Allard, Carol Piron, Joyce McKinney and Deb Ross, took C flight.
Two eight end games on day one Monday, placed teams in three flights on day two, for two more eight end games.
Belles and Brooms begins a busy schedule at the club this season.
On Sunday, December 10, it's a free open house, from 2:30 p.m. to five. Guests can try curling with coaches instructing.
A mixed doubles cashspiel occurs December 15-17th.
In early February, there's a provincial senior men's and women's qualifier, followed by the provincial mixed doubles championship later in the month (Feb 23-25).
