ST. THOMAS - It is a busy stretch of the season this week, for the St. Thomas Tomcats.
Six games over seven days has the Tomcats at the ball park almost every day this week, including a double-header, at Emslie Field, Sunday.
The Tomcats improved to 7-4, in the Junior Intercounty Baseball League, doubling up on Waterloo, 4-2, Thursday, at Emslie.
MacGuire Gordon was three for four and Will Pollard went three-for-five. Tyler Mosher and Alex Pettipiece, both had a single and drew two free passes to first base.
Pitchers Jake Haak, Connor Ambrogio, Aaron , and Ben Hebert, combined to strike out 11 batters, while allowing seven hits and two walks.
"We pitched really well. We have guys throwing strikes, which is great," Tomcats manager Arizona Phoenix said. "Our defence is getting a lot better. We're doing well on the base paths, being more aggressive. The one thing I really like to improve on, is hitting with runners in scoring position. We were like one for nine tonight. We need to bear down on that and then we'll get better results."
St. Thomas broke a 1-1 tie, in the bottom of the third inning and tacked on a run, in the sixth, when Pollard knocked in Gordon, who led off with a triple.
"Macguire Gordon had a very good game offensively," Phoenix said.
The Tomcats beat Brantford on the road Monday, but lost at Guelph on Wednesday. St. Thomas visits Waterloo Saturday. The twin bill Sunday starts at noon.
In two weeks, the Tomcats will be at their provincial elimination tournament, in Windsor.
