ST. THOMAS - Mike Roth is aiming to build on the success from the Canada Summer Games back in August.

Roth, a sophomore at the University of Texas-San Antonio (UTSA), won the men's 200-metre dash, finishing with a personal best indoor time of 21.26 seconds, at an indoor athletics meet at the University of New Mexico January 21.

The 20-year old from St. Thomas posted a second indoor PB, placing ninth in the 400-metre dash (47.26 sec.). Roth was also on the Roadrunner's men's 4x400-metre relay team that finished fifth (3:13.64).

Last summer, Roth won 200 (21.20 sec.) and 400 (47.37 sec.) gold, at the 2022 Canada Summer Games, before helping Team Ontario win the men's 4x800-metre relay and bronze in the 4x400 metre relay.

UTSA opened the 2023 indoor season January 14, in Houston Texas. Roth was second in the 200 (21.61 sec.)and third in the 400 (49.30 sec.).

Roth set his career PBs for the 200 and 400, 21.14 seconds and 46.14 seconds, at the 2021 World U20 Athletics outdoor championships, in Kenya.

At the 2022 Canadian track and field championships, Roth placed fifth, in the senior men's 400, finishing in 47.21 seconds.
 

DeSousa top long jump

Tayah DeSousa, a sophomore at Long Beach University, in Los Angeles, placed eighth, in women's long jump (5.58 metres), at the Air Force Invitational indoor track and field meet January 21, in Academy, Colorado.

The 19-year old from St. Thomas, placed 15th, in the 60-metre hurldes (9.01 seconds) and 18th, in shot put (8.85m).

DeSousa, a graduate from Central Elgin C.I., is preparing to compete in multi events, such as the pentathlon.
 

Sauer golden at Western

Xavier Sauer took gold in three events at the Don Wright Challenge and All-Comers indoor track and field meet, at Western University, Jan. 20-21.

Sauer, with the St. Thomas Legion Club, won the U14 boys' high jump (1.30m), long jump (4.44m) and 60-metre dash (8.82 sec.).

St. Thomas Legion had 11 top six results.

Fletcher Taylor won the U16 boys long jump (4.40m) and finished fifth, in the 60 meters (8.84 sec.)

Aiyana John was fourth in U16 girls long jump (4.32m) and fifth, in the 60 meters (8.85 sec.).

Lynsay Last  finished third, in U20 women's 60-meter dash, and fourth for both the 300 meter dash (49.78 sec.) and long jump (8.77m).

  team width= Jadyn Luna, of Thorndale, won the U20 women's long jump and placed second in shot put and the 60-meter hurdles.

Alexis Gray, of St. Thomas, placed sixth, in the U18 women's 300 meters (48.58 sec.)

Heidi Thorpe, of St, Thomas, finished fifth in the U16 girls 300 metres (49.92 sec.) and seventh, in the 60 metres (9.14 sec.)

Matt Piekny, of St. Thomas, with London-Western club, won the U18 men's pole vault (3.75m), while Libby McCurdy, of Sparta, placed second in U18 girls' pole vault (3.00m).

Jadyn Luna, of Thorndale, with London-Western, won U20 women's long jump (4.97m) and finished second in shot put (10.53m) and the 60-metre hurdles (10.12 sec.)

Evan Stevens, age 15, from Thorndale, also with London-Western, finished fifth, in the U18 men's 300 meters (40.87 sec.) and seventh, in the 60 meters (7.82 sec.)

At the university level, Brianna Rand, of Dorchester with the Western Mustangs, was third in women's triple jump (11.38m) and sixth, in the 60 meter hurdles (9.55 sec.)

Clairesse Coffey, of St. Thomas, with Western, placed fourth in women's long jump (5.01m) and fifth in triple jump (10.93m).

Dylen Belanger, of St. Thomas, running with the Mustangs, won the men's 300-metre hurdles (37.09 sec.)

Brady Fodor, from Shedden, was eighth, in men's weight throw (11.54m) and 13th, in shot put (11.25m)
