ETOBICOKE, ON - Liam Metzger is up to his old tricks again.
The forward scored both game winning goals, as the St. Thomas Jr. Stars opened the Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) atom A championship with a pair of victories.
St. Thomas was shorthanded, when Metzger potted the go ahead goal, against the Woodstock Woodstock Jr. Navy Vets, on route to a 4-2 win. Then the Jr. Stars rolled over the Temiskaming Shores Puckhounds, 7-3.
In late March, Metzger had the game winner, also shorthanded, against Innisfil, in the clinching game of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) Atom A final.
That six points to zero series win, qualified the Jr. Stars for this weekend's OHF tournament, featuring league champions from Alliance, Northern Ontario and Greater Toronto and the host organization.
Trailing 2-1 after two periods to Woodstock, the Alliance champions, St. Thomas rallied with goals by Sam Taylor, Metzger and Owen Lawrence, also short-handed.
Mathew Zylstra picked up two assists, including on Ethan Silcox's power play goal that gave St. Thomas a 1-0 lead. Taylor and Lawrence also picked up one assist each in the game.
St. Thomas built a 7-0 lead, before Temiskaming Shores, the Northern Ontario Hockey Association champs, found the score sheet.
Metzger and Taylor both scored twice, while AJ Power, Kaleb Leveque and Ryan Willmore, had singles.
St. Thomas plays the Willowdale Blackhawks (1-1) and the West Mall Lighting (0-2), on Saturday, to complete the round robin.
Taylor is tied for the Atom A scoring lead, with Cameron Olsen of Temiskaming Shores, both with four points, after two games.
