ST. THOMAS - It was a pair of first place showdowns between the St. Thomas Hawks and the Cobras.
Now with one week remaining in the London Minor Football regular season, the Hawks are in the driver's seat and still undefeated, for both the atom and peewee divisions.
A late second quarter touchdown propelled the Hawks towards a 34-18 win in the peewee match. Tied 6-6, Gunnar Smith found the end zone, followed by a two-point convert catch by Drew Foster. The Hawks led 20-12 at half.
Kris Vigers had three TDs, while Smith finished with two. Myles West also caught a two point convert pass.
Jeremy Shawkence, with two and Kenyen Aphayvong scored the touchdowns for the Cobras.
In atom action, Eric Poole scored two touchdowns and Mathew Coleman, one TD, leading the Hawks to a 29-7 win. Kolton Bergeron had a TD, ran in a one point convert and threw the ball to Eoin DesRosiers and Jack Teare, for a pair of two point conversions.
"It was our toughest game so far this year. They (Cobras) really pushed us to make adjustments," Hawks' coach Andrew Walker said. "Our kids responded well on our sidelines each time we made little adjustments to what the other team was doing. Our D has really been a strong point for us all year. They make you earn every yard you get and never worry about the last play. They stay focused on doing their job for the next one."
The tykes fell 21-7 to the Cobras.
The Hawks finish the schedule against the Hammers. The atom and peewee games are Friday, October 18th, at City Wide Fields, in London, starting at 6 p.m.
