LONDON, ON. - It's an impressive debut in girls' rugby for the St. Joe's Rams.

In their first year competing in the sport, the Rams won the Thames Valley Regional Athletics A/AA title, blanking Tillsonburg Glendale, 7-0, in the final, at St. George's Fields.

Taylor Richard had the game's lone try, coming in the last minute of the first half, followed by a successful two-point convert by Sophie Pellerine.

"Persistence and hard work from every girl on the field. Taylor scored but it was a team effort, with everybody trying to contain our ball and keeping things going forward," said Rams' coach Wolff Schweitzer. "Glendale was fantastic. We had a very similar game with them two weeks ago (a 7-0 Rams' win). Their defence was even better (today). We had a plan where we thought we'd be able to open things up, but they tackled us all over the field. We never had an inch. They worked us to the edge and we snuck by."

Day one of the season brought questions, but the Rams' community was behind the team.

"We didn't know what level to expect. We're an athletic team and we got things organized quickly. After our first three games, we knew we would have a good chance today and we're very happy it worked out," Schweitzer said. "A lot of credit goes to the girls who themselves got this organized (led by Pellerine and Leah Lowe). It was easy for us to come in and coach, as we had a good group of players. (Co-coaches) Joel Howard and Abe Giesbrecht did a ton of work getting things organized and our administration was very supportive."

St. Joe's heads to the WOSSAA A/AA tournament at the home of the Huron-Perth representative, Thursday, May 23rd.

"We're excited. We have a very tough challenge."

Stratford Northwestern finished first in Huron-Perth, with a 5-1 record. Northwestern split the season series with Stratford St. Mike's.
