ST. THOMAS - For the second consecutive year the Parkside Stampeders rule the local wrestling mat.
The Stampeders kept the Thames Valley Region Athletics (TVRA) Dual Meet title, at their school with a come from behind team effort. Wrestling's regular season are several meets held at various schools. The title meet featured PCI in matches against CCH and Saunders.
"Our kind of TSN turning point was Logan Taylor. He was losing his match, 8-2, but caught the guy on a move and ended up pinning him," said Dale. "At one point we were down 30-9 to Saunders and then we came back. We clawed back to 38-28 and it was Logan's win that pulled us up. It seemed to spark our team."
In the final match, Parkside senior Brady Johnson won to give Parkside the title.
"Saunders led 66-64 prior to the final match," Dale said. "(Johnson) pinned their heavy weight and it ended up 69-66."
The Stampeders are led by such seasoned wrestlers as Johnson, Cole Moore, Julie Boyko, Emma Penner and Gavin Eldridge, an OFSAA silver medalist last year. This year Dale has been impressed by the number of rookies, like Taylor and Tyler Dale.
"We have a large team and the goal every year is to be our best. The kids train hard they are very competitive," coach Dale said. "When they want it, it's easier to coach as everyone is on the same page."
Now the Stampeders prepare for the TVRA conference championships, Thursday, February, 13th, at Saunders Secondary school, followed by WOSSAA (Western Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association), Friday, Feb. 21st, at Banting high school. The top two in each weight class at WOSSAA, advance to OFSAA, this year in Sault Ste. Marie, March 2-4th.
"The whole team has practiced hard all year and are now stepping up so they all could potentially be there," adds coach Dale. "They're doing a great job, so hopefully we keep it going."
Parkside, St. Joe's, Central Elgin will be competing at the TVRA Michienzi conference championships. London schools Banting, Saunders, Laurier, CCH and Mother Teresa, are also in this conference.
