Tincaps edge Cardinals for LDBA 9U title

LONDON, Ont. - Twice the St. Thomas Cardinals jumped out to leads of 5-0 in the first inning. Twice the West London Tincaps came back to win the game in the final inning.

The Tincaps stunned the first place Cardinals, 11-10 and 10-9, to take the London District Baseball Association (LDBA) 9U title Monday.

In the final, St Thomas led 5-0 after one inning and 9-3 heading into the seventh inning.

West London came alive with seven runs in the top of the seventh, for a 10-7 lead.

The Cardinals pulled to within one run, but left the tying run on second base.

Ben Wakefield, Jose Albor, Cohen Coombs, Xavi Hill and Greyson Ramnath, had two hits each for St. Thomas, in game that finished after 10 p.m.

In game one of the night, the Cardinals showed why they were 4-0 heading into the game, scoring seven runs in the opening inning and two more runs in the second.

West London battled back and had the game tied at nine by the sixth inning.

The Tincaps outscored the Cardinals, 2-1, in the seventh inning, for the win and requiring a second game on the night.

Brett Gustavson led the red birds going three-for-three at the plate, including a double, and had three RBIs.

Wakefield, Coombs, Ramnath and Landen Dykstra, each had two hits.

It was the battle of the top two teams from the regular season, with St. Thomas taking the pennant with 19-2 record and West London on their heels at 17-4.

St. Thomas travels to Chatham this coming weekend for their Ontario Baseball Association championship.
