ST. THOMAS - The St. Thomas Cardinals split a pair of games on day one of the London District Baseball Association (LDBA) 18U Select playoffs.
The Cardinals beat the Southwest Scorpions, 7-2, Friday night at Emslie Field, to the Dorchester Diamondbacks, 15-11, in their opener at Cardinal Field.
Pitcher Ashton Curtis tossed a five hitter over a complete seven inning game, while striking out 11 batters, for the win against Southwest.
The Cardinals only had five hits as well, two by Nate Harrison.
After falling behind 1-0, the Cardinals scored two runs in the second inning, three in the third and two more in the fifth.
Ewan Rutkauskas gave St. Thomas a 2-1 lead with a two-run single.
Ethan Underhill had two RBIs, including a RBI single in the third.
St. Thomas swiped 12 bases in the game, three each by Curtis and Eric Gaudet and two by both Harrison and Underhill. Southwest made four errors.
Against Dorchester, the Cardinals dropped an high scoring affair.
Curtis led St. Thomas with two singles and two RBIs.
Kipton Glover with three RBIs and Landon Richardson, Max Graham, Lukas Gordon and Keenan Schnarr, each with two hits, led the D-backs offence. Austin Kuntz drew a base on balls three times.
Dorchester took 12 walks and stoled 14 bases, three by Gordon.
St. Thomas had nine free passes to first base and swiped nine bases, four by Curtis.
Both sides made three errors.
St. Thomas play Delaware-Komoka next, while Dorchester (1-0) waits for the winner of Lucas-Ilderton vs Alvinston.
