Collegiate Catch-up : Local athletes with post secondary school teams

The Nolte sisters, Annika and Bella, from Dorcehster, were at it again this past weekend (September 26-27), leading the Nipissing Lakers women's soccer team, to pair of wins that moved them up to number six in the U-Sports National rankings.

Bella Nolte scored twice, while having a whopping seven shots on net, as Nipissing dumped RMC, 3-1, Sunday in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) soccer.

Both sisters scored in a 4-3 win over Ontario Tech a day earlier in Toronto. Annika, who had the game winning goal, also picked up an assist.

On Monday, Bella earned Nipissing's female athlete of the week, picking up a certificate for a local pizza and pasta place in Sudbury.

Bella has six goals in seven games this season.

At Western University, Saturday, Ethan Dolby of St. Thomas, rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown, in the host Mustangs' 32-35 win over McMaster in OUA football.

Emmett Charles, son of Dorchester High alumnus Steve Charles, had three touchdowns in the second quarter for Western, finishing with 206 receiving yards.

Wes McLennan from St. Thomas, a linebacker with McMaster, made an interception and returned the ball 34 yards.

At Windsor, the host Lancers shelled Toronto, 54-0. Linebacker Kiean Silva from St. Thomas, made three tackles.

At the Western Invitational cross country meet, at the Thames Valley Golf course in London Saturday, Kirk Hallman of Thorndale, a first year runner with Western, placed 19th in the men's eight kilometre race, finishing in 25 minutes and 44.6 seconds (25:44.6).

Tegan Ceccanese from Dorchester, a fourth year Kinesiology student with the Laurier Hawks, placed 81st (35:23.1) in the women's eight K race.

Lily Ryder of St. Thomas, had two goals and two assists, leading the Fanshawe Falcons to a 8-0 shell-lacking of Lambton, in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women's soccer in London September 23.

Megan McLachlin, a first year middle from Dorchester, picked up an assist.

Keeper Makenna Brown from Dorchester, didn't face a shot in the shutout.

In a 1-1 tie with Redeemer, Ryder had three shots on net and assisted on the Falcons' goal. McLachlin had a pair of shots on net.

Reece Koolen from Union, a rookie pitcher with the Mohawk Mountaineers, struck out 18 batters, a new team record in a 1-0 loss in eight innings to Humber, in OCAA women's softball

The 18 Ks was one shy of the OCAA record for most in a game.

Koolen allowed four hits and three walks.

Koolen's 104 strikeouts in 11 games leads the OCAA and is already a Mohawk program record for most in a season.

In 11 appearances this season, Koolen, a graduate of Central Elgin CI, is 3-5, with a 3.52 earned-run average.

Mohawk is 4-8.

Taylor Kana from Springfield, with St. Clair, launched a two-run homer during a 12-1 drubbing of Conestoga Sunday. It's the second time Kana has went yard this season.

The sophomore is third in the OCAA, behind two players who have three dingers, including teammate Ada Umerah.

Kana had a double, scored and had a RBI sac fly, during a 6-1 win against Lambton September 24.

Kana is batting .429, sixth in the OCAA, with 10 RBIs, ninth most in the league. Her patience at the plate has drew nine walks, second highest in the OCAA.

St. Clair is 12-4.

Lexie Sawyer from St. Thomas, batted two-for-two and drew a base on balls, helping the Fanshawe Falcons edge the Humber Hawks, 3-2.

For the season, Sawyer is hitting .484, fourth best in the OCAA, with six RBIs, four runs scored and has swiped two bases. Sawyer's on base percentage s .553 is third in the OCAA, that includes four walks and twice being hit by a pitch.

Zander Battaglia from St. Thomas, with the Fanshawe Falcons men's golf team, placed 19th (plus-13) at the Georgian Invitational September 12.

John Van Bilsen from Glencoe won the event carding an one-under.

The OCAA golf championships are at Firerock club in Komoka, September 28-30.
