CHATHAM, Ont - The St. Thomas 9U Cardinals are going for an Ontario Baseball Association (OBA) title.
The Cardinals handed the Leamington Lakers their first loss of the tournament, 6-3, at the 9U B championship Sunday. A Leamington win would have clinched the tournament.
The final game of the tournament that started with 40 teams, goes Monday.
Leamington gave the Cardinals their only loss on Saturday.
Four runs in the sixth inning gave the Cardinals the lead, which held through the seventh inning.
The Cardinals led 2-0 going into the fourth inning, before Leamington put three runs up on the score board, for a 3-2 advantage.
Down one, Brett Gustavson tied the game with a RBI single. Ben Wakefield delivered a two run double for a 5-3 lead, then scored on Nolan Dodson's double.
Wakefield finished two-for-three, with three RBIs and Dodson, two-for-three, with two RBIs.
Cohen Coombs batted two-for-two and Zion Gibbens, two-for-three.
Catcher Xavi Hill was named game MVP.
Hill, with Dodson at third base, nabbed a Laker in a run down between third base and home plate.
The defence turned one double play and had one error.
Earlier Sunday, St Thomas pumped out 26 hits slapping the Brockton Royals, 17-0, in five innings.
Every Cardinal had a hit and all but two players had two or more hits.
Gustavson and Josie Goodhie were both four-for-four, including two doubles, with three RBIs.
Jose Albor was two-for-three, including a double, with three RBIs, Dodson, three-for-four, four runs driven in and three runs scored and Jame Laddy, three-for-three.
