LONDON, ON. - The Forest Park Firebirds end their season with a victory.

It was not a medal, but Forest Park brought home the won the consolation title from the TVDSB elementary AA boys' basketball finals, defeating the Tillsonburg Southridge Royals, 39-22, at Laurier secondary school.

Forest Park was edged 32-28 by London Sherwood Fox, in their AA opener, but regrouped to defeat Woodstock Roch Carrier, 30-28, in their second game.

"Our first game, we missed six open shots that bounced around the net. If they had gone in, it could have been the difference between playing for the consolation or playing for a medal," Firebirds' coach Dave Westaway said. "Today we showed we could have played for one of those medals."

The Firebirds went 2-1 at the 'Valley' championships, a week after capturing the SouthWest regional 'A' title, defeating Elgin Court in the final, winning 24-19, in overtime.

"We have a good group of kids that played hard and really developed their skills this year," said Westaway. "Being in the A division, we didn't have a lot of push other than Elgin Court. They gave us a really good game that we ended up winning in overtime."

In the consolation final, the Firebirds built a 23-9 lead by half-time.

Jordan MacDougall led the Firebirds in the consolation game, with 16 points, while Brayden Carvery had 13 points.

"Jordan and Brayden were our two main players as far as shooting the ball, with support from Isaac White. Three grade eights who have been there all the way through."

Guiding a team effort, with leadership on the court was MacDougall, Carvery, White and Nick Estepa.

Westaway also credited coach Craig Doupe, now at Mitchell Hepburn school after 20 years at Forest Park, for his leadership and coaching of the Firebirds' junior hoops program.

McDougall has been selected to play in the TVDSB all-star game, following March Break.

London Glen Cairn beat London F.D. Roosevelt, in the AA gold medal game. London Sherwood Fox took home the bronze medal.

In AAA action, both the Southwold Cougars and Locke's Lions, lost their first two games and were eliminated. London White Oaks beat London Jack Chambers for the gold medal. London Northridge grabbed the bronze.

In A boys, London Lord Elgin defeated London SGE Cartier, for the gold medal.
