DORCHESTER - A year after advancing to the OFSAA girls' soccer quarterfinals, the Dorchester Beavers have higher aspirations.
"We made the final eight at OFSAA last year and we're hoping to make final four this year," Dorchester coach Richard Cracknell said. "I have high expectations. I think this team is probably better than last year's team."
The Beavers took step one closer to their season's goal, by advancing to the Thames Valley Regional Athletics South-East 1A final, with a 9-0 shelling of the West Elgin Wildcats, in their semifinal, at the Thames Centre soccer fields.
Hannah Vickers burned the Wildcats four times, while Avery Dance had two goals and Michaela Farrugia, Leiha Hunt, Katie McDonald and Annika Nolte, one each.
"I'm starting to see a team really gelling together," said Cracknell. "We're playing well. You're starting to see a lot more passing, a lot more set balls and a lot more faith in what their fellow players can do. A team effort."
Vickers is the offensive focal point of the team, but the Beavers have also had major contributions from their freshmen.
"We have some really strong Grade nines. They've made a solid impact," adds Cracknell.
Dorchester faces the Central Elgin Titans, in the TVRA 1A South-East final Thursday, 1:30 p.m at the Tillsonburg Minor Soccer Park. The winner advances to the Western Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association (WOSSAA) tournament, at Van Dyk Park in Strathroy, Tuesday, May 28th.
The Titans edged Woodstock CI, 3-2, in their South-East semifinal.
The Beavers finished undefeated in the East Division, outscoring opponents, 16-3 over four games.
One challenge the Beavers could face and it's an event that affects many teams each year, the school's prom occurs on day one of OFSAA.
The high school provincial championship, is in Ancaster / Caledonia, June 6-8.
