ST. THOMAS - The St. Thomas Jr. Stars are Shamrock League U16A champions.
Kaje Thorogood provided all the offence, scoring a hat trick, as St. Thomas edged the South Oxford Storm, 3-2, in the decisive game three of the U16A final March 29 at the Joe.
"I see the back of the net, so I put it in the back of the net," said Thorogood, who also had a three goal performance in game one. "Always known for a being a goal scorer. Beauty teammates get it up to me and I bury it."
Thorogood gave the Stars leads of 1-0 and 2-1, in game three, before adding a third goal that held up to be the game winner.
"We killed off our penalties and our goalie played great," Stars captain Bray Goetz said. "We tried to stay out of the box, blocking shots and doing the little things right."
The Stars opened the best of three game final with a 7-2 game one win, but lost game two, 2-1, in Tillsonburg, home of the Storm.
Thorogood led the Stars with a hat trick in game one, while Dezzy Fulton had a goal and two assists. John Circelli, Ty Bridge and Van McVeigh also scored and Logan Busby picked up two assists.
"Our goaltender is the best goalie in the league and he's always got us," Thorogood said. "They thought they could get in our heads, but we just let their words go right past us. We kept it clean."
St. Thomas finishes the Shamrock playoffs with 9-2-3, part of their 38-6-6 overall record.
The Stars move on to the Ontario Minor Hockey Association championship, April 4-6 in Whitby.
"Feels wonderful," said Thorogood. ""It'll be a great time there with the boys."
Along with the U16 Stars, St. Thomas U12, U15 and U18 teams won Shamrock titles and have their respective OMHA tournaments.
