LONDON, Ont. - The Aquinas Flames burned the St. Joseph's Rams in the opening game of the District girls' hockey final.
Madison Chantler scored three times to lead the Flames over the Rams, 6-2, in game one of the best of three affair, today at Bostwick arena.
Aquinas scored in the opening minute of the game and made it 3-1, two minutes in to the second period.
Christine Annett pulled the Rams to within a goal, but the Flames struck back less than a minute later, for a 4-2 advantage.
"I knew they would come hard. They're a loaded team. They have a lot of quality players out there," Rams coach Dave Fox said. "I'm proud of our girls. We were gritty. We worked hard right to the end of the game. We got better as the game went on."
Grace Gilchrist also scored for the Rams.
Emma Pais and Sydney Vandenberg, completed the Flames' goal scoring
St. Joe's came up empty on the power play, while Aquinas was one for four.
"We're back at them Monday. So if we bring the same energy and tweet a few things and we'll see if we can close the gap a bit," Fox said. "We just have to play with them and keep them outside. Our game plan is make sure our goaltender has good looks at everything coming at her. They have a lot of fire power so we have to keep that as far away from the net as possible. We did a decent job of it."
Game two is Monday, Feb. 28, back at Bostwick, while game three is, Wednesday, March 2, at the Joe in St. Thomas.
