ST. MARYS, Ont. - They are returning home with silver.

The West Elgin Wildcats met a more talented team in the WOSSAA A senior girls' volleyball final, named the St. Marys Salukis.

The host team won the gold medal and advances to OFSAA, following a three game sweep of the Wildcats, 25-8, 25-10, 25-17.

"We competed all day long. Our girls didn't quit. In fact, we got better as the match went on," Wildcats coach Dave Burke said.  "The goal was to get to WOSSAA and see what happens. A silver medal is awesome."

Burke had high praise for the champions.

"We were out fire powered by (St. Marys). They were fantastic. I don't think we played a team that good all year. They have outstanding setting and really consistent hitting. Their tempo in the middle was so fast we couldn't keep up with it," Burke said. "Their setter (Abbey Thorup) is outstanding. She has incredible hands. She sets the tempo on the offence."

In the WOSSAA semi-finals, West Elgin defeated North Middlesex three games to one, while St. Marys dusted Monseigneur-Bruyere in three games.

Following a fourth place finish in the Thames Valley Regional South-East Division, West Elgin took the TVRA A playoff title, beating the St. Thomas Voaden Vikings and Glencoe Gaels.

"When Glencoe starting coming back in that match, we kept persevering we kept pushing and pushing. When we got down, we didn't get down for very long. We kept plugging away until things turned around our way."
