TILLSONBURG, Ont. - Holding a rallying cry going into the final, the Dorchester U11 LL3 Dragons captured their first tournament crown.

Dorchester calmed the Tillsonburg Tornadoes, 6-1, in the Local League U11 division final, at the Max Partlo Memorial tournament, February 14-16.

"The team felt very proud of the win," Dragons' coach Michael Gardner. "There has been a sense of being underdogs, but at the same time, when we are on our best game, we are able to be a tough match for anyone. It was good for the team for all of the things we have been working on to come together."

The Dragons were motivated to win for teammate Weston Marsh, who was unable to be with the team. Dorchester also wanted to avenge a tournament opening 3-2 loss to Tillsonburg.

"What stood out about the team was their positive attitude," coach Gardner said. "They had fun through out and supported each other.

Dorchester went 2-1 through the round robin, needing to win their third game by eight goals or more to advance to the playoffs and produced a 10-0 result.

In the semifinals, the Dragon doubled up on the Mid Huron Huskies, 4-2.

"The team responded well to making defensive adjustments and the scoring chances came from there," Gardner said. "After the first game, when scoring chances appeared, they took advantage of them. Our goalie was well protected, but when scoring chances for the opposition inevitably happened, he frustrated them with key stops."

Goalie Jackson Carey led the tournament with a goals-against average of 2.45 over five games.

"Our leading players found ways to change the flow of the game and our rookie players found ways to contribute through hard work," added Gardner.

Centreman Cameron Gardner led the tournament with 10 goals, while defenceman Jakub Makos, led all blueliners with eight points.

Acting captain Caruso Cupello, "had a break out performance," said coach Gardner, with five goals and assists.

Scoreless after one period in the final, Dorchester scored three times in each of the second and third periods.

Cameron Gardner with two, Makos, Cupello, Jacob Hutchinson and Eberle Ashby, had the goals.

Gardner, Cupello, Eberle Ashby, Ethan Lobb and Penn Cole, picked up assists.
