ST. THOMAS - The underdogs won the day.
In a back and forth match, the Ingersoll Blue Bombers edged the Parkside Stampeders for the Thames Valley Region Athletics (TVRA) SouthEast senior girls AA volleyball final Wednesday.
Entering the final, the Stampeders were unbeaten in TVRA action, finishing the regular season at 8-0, while Ingersoll placed fourth at 5-3.
"They've improved a lot over the season," Parkside coach Chris Palmer said. "They don't let the ball hit the floor. When they get good passing, they hit the ball. They finish well. They've got some good servers. All the same things we've got, that's why we had such a great match today."
The Stampeders opened with a 25-21 win, before Ingersoll took the marathon game two, 30-28. Parkside pulled out game three, 25-23. Ingersoll tied the match again, with a 25-21 result.
Tied at seven, Parkside moved ahead 9-7 in game five, but the Bombers responded with run of five points, for a 12-9 advantage, leading way to a 15-13 victory.
"Obviously, we would have liked it to go the opposite way but the girls played well day," Palmer said. "Ultimately, Ingersoll pulled it out. They won the battle of who could make the least errors. Unforced errors. That's all. We hurt ourselves more than they hurt us."
Both teams advance to WOSSAA AA, at St. Mike's high school in Stratford, February 20. Joining Parkside and Ingersoll, will be host St. Mike's (8-1) and London Oakridge (8-0).
The winner advances to OFSAA, March 3-5, in North Bay.
