LONDON, Ont. - The St. Thomas Reds stepped up showing their capabilities on the final weekend of the season.
Imogen Salin and Rylan Watson scored, as St. Thomas blanked the first place Oakridge Fury, 2-0, to win the U17 girls' District Cup, in the Elgin Middlesex District Soccer League, Sunday, at North London Fields.
"We played really well," Watson said. "I found we controlled the field quite a bit. We were pressuring very well and communicating very well. We played really well this weekend.
Keeper Jessy Rady had the shutout and also the clean sheet, in a 1-0 win over Strathroy United, in the semifinals, on Saturday. Reece Coleman potted the match's lone goal.
"We showed up to play this weekend," Watson said. "In regular season games, we would show up to play but I guess we didn't always give it our all. This weekend we were realizing this is our last game, and we performed."
St. Thomas finished third in the standings, with a record of four wins, one tie and eight losses (4-1-8), behind London Southwest (8-4-1) and Oakridge (10-2-2). The Fury won all three meetings against the Reds during the season.
"Our season record truly does not reflect our skill or our game play. Many of those games were close fought battles," St. Thomas coach Nikki Johnson said. "Me and my assistant coach Jeff Lister have said all season we could beat any team in this league, if we played our game, and that's what we have proven."
Cup action started with a quarterfinal shootout win over Southwest.
"In Cup, our girls really played as a team," Johnson said. "Communicating with each other, passing and supporting each other on the field. We have such a great group of girls and they truly came out with full effort and heart for the game. I am a very proud coach."
