ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - Gavin Eldridge, of St. Thomas, with the Western Mustangs, brought home a silver medal from the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) wrestling championships, at Brock University.
Eldridge, 3-1 overall, lost to Lakehead's Marco Palermo, in the men's 61-kilogram gold medal match.
The King's College student medaled at each meet this season, including winning gold, at the Ontario Winter Open, Western Open and Western Invitational.
"My rookie year week went well," said Eldridge, adding it was a learning year.
"Just adjustments with the way I'm going to wrestle certain people," Eldridge said. "There are always learning opportunities whenever you step on the mat, especially with wrestling more seasoned people."
Western's men's team placed third, behind Brock and McMaster.
The U-Sports wrestling championships were cancelled this season due to COVID concerns.
Up next for Eldridge, are the Canadian Wrestling Trials, at the University of Alberta, in Edmonton, May 26-29, for a spot on the Junior National team.
A 2021 graduate of Parkside Collegiate Institute, Eldridge made three appearances at OFSAA for the Stampeders, winning a silver medal, in 2019 (57.5-kg) and 2020 (61-kg).
Capping the season, Eldridge was named men's wrestling MVP, at the Western Mustangs athletic awards.
